Monaco marked World Environment Day on June 5 with a dynamic public event on rue Princesse Caroline, reaffirming its commitment to reducing plastic pollution and achieving a zero plastic target by 2030…

Organised by the Department of the Environment, the event transformed the lower part of the pedestrian street into an interactive awareness space, welcoming visitors throughout the day.

Workshops, exhibits, and educational stands were hosted in collaboration with a wide range of local partners. The Town Hall, the Mission for Energy Transition, the Jardin Animalier, and Écoscience Provence were all present, offering activities and information tailored to both children and adults. From sustainability-themed games to workshops on composting and alternatives to single-use plastics, the aim was to engage the public in practical and positive ways.

“We’ve taken over the street to bring people together around this vital cause,” said Valérie Dav of the Department of the Environment. “The government’s zero plastic goal is clear, and events like this help us make it real for people, by showing alternatives and supporting those who want to do better.”

Since 2016, Monaco has steadily implemented legislation to phase out plastic usage across the Principality. Recognising the complexity of regulation, the government, alongside organisations like Écoscience Provence, provides support to businesses, restaurants, and citizens seeking sustainable alternatives.

As World Environment Day shone a spotlight on global challenges, Monaco’s local action reflected its ongoing environmental leadership and commitment to shaping a cleaner, plastic-free future.
