On Monday 12th May, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II travelled to Malaussène in the Alpes-Maritimes to witness the completion of restoration works made possible through Monaco’s financial aid following Storm Alex…
The visit highlighted the Principality’s ongoing support for neighbouring French communities affected by the devastating storm in October 2020. Storm Alex caused widespread destruction across the region, resulting in the loss of 18 lives and extensive damage to infrastructure. In response, Monaco swiftly mobilised €3 million in aid for reconstruction projects across multiple villages. Malaussène, located 60 km from Monaco in the Var Valley, was among the beneficiaries.

Two key heritage structures—the 18th-century mill and the adjacent canal supplying water to the village—were severely impacted by landslides during the storm. With a €200,000 grant from Monaco, both sites have now been restored. During his visit, Prince Albert II was accompanied by Jean-Pierre Castiglia, Mayor of Malaussène, and Charles-Ange Ginésy, President of the Alpes-Maritimes Departmental Council.
A commemorative plaque of gratitude to the Principality was unveiled at the entrance of the mill to mark the occasion. The restored sites now stand as symbols of resilience and cooperation between Monaco and its neighbouring communities.
Malaussène is just one of several communes to benefit from Monaco’s post-storm solidarity. Other projects funded by the Principality include the reconstruction of a bridge in Breil-sur-Roya, repairs to village walls in Saorge, church roof repairs in Tende, and restoration work in Valdeblore and elsewhere.
Thanks in part to Monaco’s swift and sustained support, the visible scars of Storm Alex are gradually disappearing.
