Dr. Jean-Jacques Risso has been officially named president of the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM), following an Ordonnance Souveraine issued on March 6, 2025…
Dr. Risso succeeds Professor Patrick Rampal, who led the institution for two decades, shaping its reputation as a global leader in marine biology, polar research, and human health sciences.
Born in Monaco in 1958, Dr. Risso is a distinguished expert in human physiology, particularly in underwater environments. He earned his doctorate from the University of Lyon I, focusing on the effects of high-pressure environments on the human nervous system. His career spans over four decades, beginning as a civilian research engineer in 1980, where he specialized in studying the impact of deep-sea pressures on the nervous system at the Centre d’Études et de la Recherche Appliquées à la Marine, a research division of the French military. Throughout his tenure, he has led multiple scientific programs and authored more than 130 research publications.
Upon his appointment, Dr. Risso expressed gratitude to Prince Albert II and the Princely Government for their trust. He highlighted his commitment to continuing the CSM’s pioneering research and acknowledged the significant contributions of his predecessor. Under his leadership, he aims to uphold the institution’s role as a key player in global scientific research, emphasizing innovation and sustainability in addressing pressing environmental and health challenges.
Dr. Risso will be supported by Dr. Sylvie Tambutté, overseeing scientific direction, and Delphine Frappier, managing financial, administrative, and human resources aspects of the institution. His leadership is expected to further enhance Monaco’s contributions to scientific progress and environmental preservation.
