New works are set to begin at Monaco’s cemetery following the discovery of significant water infiltration affecting part of the site…

Already undergoing upgrades linked to the future Charles III block and the modernisation of the funeral home, the cemetery will now face additional construction focused on securing the “Capucine” gallery.

As reported by Monaco Matin, the issue stems from compromised waterproofing and drainage failures, which have led to water stagnation and structural concerns within the gallery below. A previous expert assessment was unable to guarantee the building’s solidity, prompting partial closure and making the upcoming works essential for safety.

The project, expected to last between six and eight months, will require the temporary relocation of 650 urns from 505 niches. These will be moved a short distance to the more recent “Myosotis” columbarium, with assurances that each urn will be carefully identified, documented and returned to its original place once works are complete.

Authorities have contacted more than 800 families to inform them of the process, emphasising that access to burial sites will be maintained throughout. While sensitive, the operation has been largely well received, with officials underlining that the works are necessary to preserve both the site and the dignity of those laid to rest.
