Monaco experienced a deeply symbolic and emotional day on March 28 as Pope Leo XIV made his first apostolic visit to the Principality, only the second international trip of his pontificate since his election in May 2025…
From the early hours, crowds gathered across Monaco to witness a visit that combined spiritual reflection, public displays of devotion and state ceremony on an exceptional scale, confirming the significance of the occasion for both the Principality and the wider Catholic world.

The Holy Father arrived at around 9:00 at the Monaco heliport before heading to the Prince’s Palace, where he was welcomed by Their Serene Highensses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène, along with their children. In the Cour d’Honneur, military honours were performed by the Carabiniers, firefighters and the Prince’s Carabiniers Orchestra, which performed both the papal and Monegasque anthems. The Pope and the Sovereign then reviewed the troops and presented their respective delegations before holding a private bilateral meeting inside the palace.

Discussions between the two leaders reportedly focused on shared priorities including peace, environmental protection, human dignity and international cooperation. A gift exchange followed, with Prince Albert II presenting Pope Leo XIV with a relic of Saint Leo the Great. The Pope then appeared on the palace balcony beside the Princely Family for one of the day’s most anticipated moments. In solemn addresses, both leaders spoke of Monaco’s Christian heritage and the urgent need for peace grounded in justice and reconciliation. The Pope’s message, delivered in French, resonated strongly with those gathered below.

The visit then moved into a more pastoral and popular phase. At Monaco Cathedral, Pope Leo XIV met the Catholic community and delivered a homily emphasising unity, faith and the importance of fraternity within Monaco’s diverse population. His words highlighted the Principality’s unique identity as a small but deeply international state, where coexistence and shared values play a central role.

He later travelled by popemobile to Sainte-Dévote, where he met young Catholics and catechumens in a vibrant and reflective gathering marked by music, testimony and prayer. The encounter underscored the Pope’s focus on youth, encouraging them to live their faith actively and to carry forward values of solidarity and hope.

The day concluded at Stade Louis II, where around 15,000 people attended a major open-air mass. In his homily, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful call for compassion, unity and responsibility in a world marked by tension and uncertainty.
By evening, Monaco had not simply hosted a papal visit, but experienced a defining national moment; one that will remain etched in the Principality’s collective memory for years to come.
