A new chapter in Monaco’s cultural ambitions has begun with the launch of the Prince of Monaco Creation Grant in partnership with the Villa Medici in Rome…

Presented by HSH Prince Albert II, the initiative aims to support contemporary artistic creation while strengthening ties between heritage and modern expression. The €30,000 grant, awarded for the first time, will fund the production of an original work by an artist in residence at the prestigious French Academy in Rome.

The inaugural recipient is artist Nicolas Dovan, recognised for his compelling exploration of memory, confinement and resistance. His project, titled The Inner Fire, reinterprets classical works and architectural elements of the Villa Medici through innovative techniques such as photograms and iron powder drawings. Drawing inspiration from figures like Galileo and masters including Velázquez and Ingres, his work seeks to bridge historical legacy with contemporary artistic language.

This unprecedented collaboration reflects Monaco’s long-term commitment to fostering creativity and supporting emerging talent on an international stage. By offering both financial backing and institutional visibility, the grant provides a significant platform for artists to develop ambitious projects during their residency.

At the end of their stay, recipients will unveil newly created works, contributing to a broader dialogue between Monaco, Rome and the global art scene. The initiative positions the Principality as an active patron of contemporary creation, with ambitions extending well beyond its borders.
