His Serene Highness Prince Albert II made an unexpected appearance at Westminster Abbey on Monday, March 9, attending the annual Commonwealth Day service alongside members of the British royal family and international guests.
The ceremony, one of the most prominent fixtures on the British royal calendar, celebrates the 56 nations of the Commonwealth and traditionally brings together senior royals, government representatives, and cultural figures for a programme of music, readings and performances reflecting the diversity of the organisation.
Prince Albert was seen arriving at the Abbey ahead of the British royal family, drawing attention as Monaco is not a member of the Commonwealth and foreign heads of state rarely attend the event. His presence nevertheless reflects the Principality’s long-standing diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom.
The service itself featured the customary multicultural programme of poetry, dance, music and speeches representing Commonwealth nations. According to Buckingham Palace, the event is intended to showcase the Commonwealth’s spirit of cooperation by bringing together leaders, young people and members of the creative community.
Prince Albert’s visit to Westminster Abbey marked his first appearance there since the coronation of King Charles III in May 2023, an event that brought together royal families and world leaders from across the globe.
The Monegasque sovereign has maintained a busy international schedule in recent weeks. Most recently, he attended several events at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, where he was present both as a former Olympian and as a member of the International Olympic Committee. During the Games he was seen supporting athletes alongside members of his family and also took part in several medal ceremonies.
His appearance in London for Commonwealth Day adds another diplomatic engagement to an already active start to the year for Monaco’s head of state.
