A 29-year-old Italian waitress has been sentenced to four months in prison by Monaco’s criminal court after insulting, biting and spitting at police officers during a traffic stop while driving under the influence of alcohol…

The woman, who worked in a restaurant in Fontvieille, was tried in her absence on Monday, March 2.

The incident took place on February 13 when police stopped her vehicle on Avenue d’Ostende after she was seen driving dangerously and crossing a solid white line. Officers noted clear signs of intoxication, but she initially refused alcohol and drug testing. When officers attempted to detain her, she reportedly tried to flee through the passenger side and violently resisted arrest.

During the journey to the Public Security headquarters, she allegedly insulted the officers, spat at them and bit a policewoman’s finger, although gloves prevented injury. A blood test taken several hours later revealed an alcohol level of 1.26 grams per litre.

According to Monaco Matin, the woman later admitted the behaviour during questioning, saying she had been drinking since the morning amid personal difficulties related to a divorce.

The court ultimately imposed a four-month prison sentence along with a €45 fine for the traffic offence. Judges also ordered a three-year ban on driving and entering the Principality, while issuing an arrest warrant due to her absence at the hearing. Police officers involved were awarded damages for the incident.
