At just 23 years old, Nicolas Andouard is bringing Monaco’s history to life for a new generation through his Instagram account, Monaco in the Past…

A lifelong resident of the Principality with a passion for history since the age of 10, he shares archive photographs, vintage postcards and carefully researched anecdotes that retrace the architectural and urban evolution of Monaco.

Drawing on his own research as well as discoveries made at the Monaco media library, Nicolas creates engaging “before and after” comparisons, placing historic images alongside present-day views to highlight the transformation of streets, landmarks and neighbourhoods. Each post is accompanied by a concise but informative caption, often revealing little-known stories, from the origins of Place Antoine I to details about districts such as the Moneghetti or the Jardin Exotique, which are less frequently showcased.

Launched in January, the account has already attracted more than 4,500 followers, reflecting a genuine appetite for Monaco’s heritage beyond its luxury image. While the Principality is often seen through a glamorous or tourist lens, Nicolas focuses on its deeper historical identity, offering context and continuity to the places residents pass every day.

Through short videos and carefully curated visuals, he demonstrates that Monaco’s past remains very much alive; and that its story is still unfolding.
