Tucked between the sea and the skyline, Monaco’s Japanese Garden stands as one of the Principality’s most serene and meticulously maintained green spaces…
Awarded the prestigious Flower Show prize in Osaka in 1990, the garden continues to captivate visitors thanks to the dedication of the gardeners who care for it throughout the year.
Each morning begins early for the team responsible for preserving this tranquil oasis. Long before the first visitors arrive, they walk the winding paths inspecting branches, trimming foliage and ensuring that every element respects the traditional principles of Japanese landscaping. Careful pruning is essential, allowing sunlight to filter through the plants from top to bottom while maintaining balance and harmony within the space. The work is constant and precise, guided by seasonal cycles and a deep understanding of the garden’s living ecosystem.
Designed according to Zen philosophy by a Japanese landscape architect, the garden covers around 1,000 square metres and is home to nearly 200 species of trees and plants. Pine trees, bamboo and carefully shaped shrubs sit alongside mosses and water features, creating a carefully composed natural setting. Wildlife has also made the garden its home, with koi carp gliding through the pond and ducks settling into the peaceful surroundings.
As spring approaches, the garden will soon bloom once again, offering residents and visitors a moment of calm and contemplation. Behind its beauty lies a year-round commitment to craftsmanship and care, ensuring this corner of Japan in Monaco remains as enchanting as ever.
