Monaco’s next generation of environmental ambassadors is preparing for a journey to the ends of the Earth as the latest edition of the “Students on Ice” programme officially opened in the Principality…

The launch took place in the presence of Jean-Philippe Vinci, Director of Education, Youth and Sport, alongside former participants Carolina Massey and Alexandrine Noghès, who returned to share their experiences of exploring the polar regions.

Since 2010, the international “Students on Ice” initiative has enabled young students from around the world to take part in educational expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, guided by scientists, educators and environmental specialists. In Monaco, the Prince Albert II Foundation, in partnership with the Department of Education, supports an annual competition open to first-year students, offering a unique opportunity to join the programme.

Participants are selected through photography and written expression categories, with winners earning a place on a 15-day Arctic expedition alongside an international group of young explorers. To date, more than 30 students from the Principality have taken part, gaining first-hand insight into fragile polar ecosystems and the realities of climate change.

Beyond the adventure, the programme aims to deepen scientific understanding and foster environmental responsibility among Monaco’s youth. By witnessing the visible effects of global warming in some of the planet’s most vulnerable regions, participants return as informed ambassadors, ready to share their knowledge and inspire greater awareness within the Principality and beyond.
