His Serene Highness Prince Albert II presented the 2025 Climate Action Awards during the 145th Session of the International Olympic Committee in Milan, held as preparations intensify for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games and other major upcoming Olympic events…

The awards recognise outstanding initiatives across the global sporting movement that actively contribute to the fight against climate change. In his capacity as President of the IOC’s Sustainability and Legacy Commission, the Sovereign praised the commitment of this year’s laureates and underlined the vital role sport can play in driving a more sustainable and responsible future.

Speaking to international Olympic representatives gathered in the historic Italian city, Prince Albert II highlighted how the Climate Action Awards, launched in 2022, aim to reward athletes, federations and national Olympic committees whose actions demonstrate meaningful environmental leadership. He also noted that major sporting events, including the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, the Dakar Youth Olympic Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, must continue to embed sustainability at their core.

In the “Athletes” category, New Zealand field hockey player Hugo Inglis and Kenyan rugby sevens player Kevin Wekesa were honoured for their environmental advocacy and community engagement. The Netherlands received recognition in the “National Olympic Committees” category, while the International Biathlon Union was named winner among “International Federations”.

The ceremony served as a reminder that sport’s global platform carries significant influence beyond competition. By spotlighting innovative and responsible practices, the Olympic Movement continues to position itself as a powerful force in the collective effort to address climate challenges and promote sustainable development worldwide.
