As the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympic Games approach, Monaco will once again be represented on the world’s biggest sporting stage, albeit with a small but determined delegation…
The Principality’s sole athlete at the 2026 Games will be alpine skier Arnaud Alessandria, who will begin competition on 7 February on the demanding slopes of Bormio.
The Games mark a symbolic return to Cortina d’Ampezzo, which previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956, with Milan staging the indoor ice events. Organisers have highlighted sustainability and the use of existing venues as key pillars of the 2026 edition, aligning with the International Olympic Committee’s long-term strategy for more responsible Games.
Fifteen days ahead of the opening ceremony, the Monegasque Olympic Committee officially presented its delegation, placing its confidence in Alessandria, an experienced competitor whose career has been marked by resilience. Despite suffering several injuries in recent years, the skier has returned to form this season, delivering encouraging performances in international competitions.
This will be Alessandria’s third Olympic appearance, following his participation in Sochi in 2014 and Beijing in 2022. He recently achieved a top-30 finish in downhill and an impressive 13th place in the combined, the best result ever recorded by a Monegasque athlete in alpine skiing at this level.
Officials see his qualification as the reward for a long and demanding career, particularly meaningful as the Games are being held close to Monaco. With strong form and renewed confidence, Alessandria will look to build on his previous achievements and once again proudly represent the Principality on the Olympic slopes.
