Uki’s disappearance triggered an emotional search that has now ended in relief, thanks to rapid international cooperation and the strong mobilisation of authorities on both sides of the border…
The small dog was stolen on Saturday, December 27, from the Cannes funfair, an incident that immediately prompted concern from his family and fairground workers. CCTV footage proved decisive, allowing the owners to witness the theft and identify several individuals involved. One key detail quickly emerged: a vehicle linked to the incident was registered in Monaco, providing a crucial lead for investigators.
As the case gathered momentum on social media, Monaco’s police services intensified their inquiries. Working in close coordination with the Cannes police, the Monaco public prosecutor’s office and their French counterparts, officers were able to trace the vehicle to a residence in France. This cross-border cooperation ultimately led to Uki being located and recovered safe and unharmed on Tuesday evening.
The owner visited Monaco police headquarters to personally thank the officers involved, underlining the speed, professionalism and cooperation that characterised the investigation. The suspect now faces serious legal consequences, with the theft of an animal carrying potential custodial penalties.
Beyond its reassuring conclusion, the case has also revived discussion around the legal status of animals, which are still treated as property under criminal law despite their emotional significance. For Uki and his family, however, the outcome is clear: after days of uncertainty, he is finally back home.
