The Prince’s Government has announced the conclusion of the initial phase of the MaConsigne project, marking the end of a three-year experimentation period aimed at reducing single-use plastic packaging in the Principality.
Launched in 2022, MaConsigne introduced a reusable container system for restaurants and takeaway services, encouraging consumers to return glass containers via dedicated collection points. The initiative formed part of Monaco’s wider strategy to promote the circular economy and more sustainable consumption habits.
In a press release, the government described the results of the trial as positive from both an environmental and educational standpoint. The scheme contributed to a reduction in packaging waste and helped raise public awareness about the environmental impact of disposable containers.
However, the evaluation also highlighted limitations in the current economic and operational model. According to the authorities, adjustments are needed to better align the system with the practical expectations of restaurateurs, users and project partners.
As a result, the MaConsigne scheme in its existing form will end on Wednesday, December 31, opening a new phase of reflection to explore alternative or improved solutions.
Members of the public still in possession of MaConsigne-branded containers are invited to return them in the coming weeks. Containers not returned before the programme ends will remain the property of their holders, pending the possible launch of future similar initiatives.
