The Principality has taken precautionary measures to protect students and staff after recent monitoring revealed accelerated movement in the embankment overlooking the former Collège Charles III site at the Annonciade…

The stability of this slope has been under close surveillance for several years, with reinforcement work on the upstream retaining wall already under way since July 2025.

Surveys carried out during the All Saints’ Day holidays initially informed a new phase of consolidation planned for the Christmas break. However, the latest data has prompted heightened vigilance, leading the Prince’s Government to commission additional measurements by a specialised firm. These readings will be analysed to assess whether the reinforcements are having the intended effect, with results expected on January 4.

In the meantime, and in line with a strict safety-first approach, the Government has decided to switch to remote learning for the 840 lycée students who have been based at the former Collège Charles III since the start of the academic year. The decision also applies to teaching staff, administrative teams, and the associations that regularly use the site’s facilities.

Officials have stressed that no risks will be taken where safety is concerned. During the first week of January, the Government will determine whether on-site activities can safely resume or whether alternative arrangements, including a temporary relocation, may be required.

The Department of National Education, Youth and Sports will contact parents in the coming days with practical details on how distance learning will be implemented and supported during this interim period.
