A late-summer collision at a busy Monaco roundabout has ended with a suspended prison sentence for a 25-year-old man from Nice who fled the scene after rear-ending another vehicle…

The incident took place in July 2023 at the Canton roundabout and caused only material damage, but what could have been a routine insurance matter quickly escalated into a criminal case when the driver disappeared instead of stopping.

As reported by Monaco Matin, the young man, a temporary electrician working in Monaco at the time, claimed in court that he had felt intimidated and left out of fear. The victim strongly disputed this version, stating that she waited for him at a nearby service station, only to realise he had vanished. Without insurance details, she was unable to repair her vehicle and filed a formal complaint.

Investigators later uncovered that the driver had been without a valid licence since 2022, having lost all his points for repeated traffic offences. He was also uninsured, having stopped paying for cover. Prosecutors argued that these factors explained why he chose to flee.

The court sentenced him to eight days in prison, suspended with a two-year probation period, fined him €345, and ordered him to pay €3,000 in compensation to the victim, bringing a long-running case to a decisive close.
