Colombian cycling star Egan Bernal has been recognised for his contributions off the bike, receiving the 2025 “Peace Champion” award from Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based organisation dedicated to using sport as a tool for social change. The accolade was presented on Sunday, November 16, in his hometown of Zipaquirá during the Gran Fondo that carries his name and draws thousands of participants annually.
While Bernal’s return to competitive cycling after a serious 2022 accident — which included a national title and a stage victory at the 2025 Vuelta a España — is remarkable, the award chiefly honours his efforts to foster community and solidarity. His advocacy for social cohesion and unity has clearly resonated with both local and international observers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bernal highlighted the wider significance of the recognition. “Sport can be a unifying force,” said the 2019 Tour de France and 2021 Giro d’Italia winner, noting that Colombia’s current pre-election period is marked by political tension. “This motivates me to continue representing my country responsibly and promoting values that bring people together.”
Peace and Sport has operated in Colombia for more than ten years, partnering with local organisations and educators to support initiatives in areas affected by violence and inequality. Its Champions for Peace network brings together over 100 elite athletes who leverage their platforms to advance social projects and foster community through sport.
