Speaking on behalf of the Principality, Jérémie Adlerfligel, Third Secretary at Monaco’s Permanent Mission to the UN, presented the Government’s position during the examination of work related to this issue. He emphasised Monaco’s dedication to combating climate change, describing it as a direct cause of rising sea levels and a major threat, particularly to small island developing states.
According to Adlerfligel, ambitious measures in both mitigation and adaptation are essential to confront this growing environmental challenge. He stressed that international solidarity and cooperation must guide global efforts, ensuring that no nation faces the consequences of climate change alone.
Monaco also reaffirmed its support for the International Law Commission’s work on the subject, which aims to identify legal questions raised by rising sea levels and assist states in developing practical responses. The Principality underlined the importance of maintaining these discussions within the legal framework established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the universal instrument governing maritime activities and ensuring the protection and sustainable use of oceans.
