In New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco met with His Excellency Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic, for a bilateral discussion that underscored the closeness of the two countries…

The meeting, attended by Monaco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Permanent Representative to the UN Isabelle Picco and Cabinet Adviser Julie Donati, focused on strengthening ties across shared priorities.

The two heads of state exchanged views on Portugal’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 mandate. Prince Albert II also confirmed that the Principality looks forward to welcoming President Rebelo de Sousa for an official visit to Monaco at the end of November, an occasion expected to highlight the growing cooperation between Lisbon and the Principality.

Environmental protection, a long-standing area of convergence between the two nations, featured prominently in the discussions. Both leaders welcomed the successful organisation of this year’s UN Ocean Conferences, held consecutively in Lisbon and Nice, which have reinforced international momentum on marine conservation. They also noted the forthcoming entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction), a milestone in the governance of the high seas.

The meeting reflected Monaco’s proactive diplomacy at the UN and its close engagement with like-minded partners on issues ranging from global governance to ocean sustainability, ahead of a busy schedule of high-level sessions for the Sovereign Prince this week.
