Italian police are investigating a shocking assault that left a 21-year-old university student with serious injuries after he was attacked in the heart of Sanremo during the night of 6–7 September…

The victim, Matteo, who has a motor disability, was waiting for a bus near Via Gioberti, close to the old port, when four young men allegedly set upon him without warning. Video filmed by a nearby resident shows the attackers punching, kicking and striking Matteo with chairs taken from a restaurant terrace. He fell to the pavement while the beating continued. At one point a voice in French can be heard saying, “Ça va les mecs, il est mort” (“It’s all good, guys, he’s dead”).

Two assailants then appeared to photograph and film the motionless student before walking away. A passing driver sounded his horn to try to break up the attack, and emergency services were called.

Police intercepted and arrested three suspects minutes later. They are named as Florian Adam Faudel Zeghdar, a Monaco resident of Mauritian nationality who turns 20 on 15 September; Yassine Oulhint, born in Monaco and turning 20 on 29 September, of French nationality; and Zinedine Calderone, a French national who turned 20 on 9 September. The fourth alleged participant fled and remains at large.

Matteo’s lawyer, Matteo Ponzio, described the violence as “unspeakably brutal”, saying his client faces a long recovery and possible permanent neurological damage affecting his lower limbs, alongside severe psychological trauma.

Judge Anna Bonsignorio held a hearing in Sanremo to validate the arrests. Prosecutor Benedetta Franceschi has requested prison custody for all three, who answered questions in court. As of publication no decision had been announced, and police continue their search for the fourth suspect.
