With peak tourist season overlapping daily commuter flows, Monaco’s roads are now carrying traffic levels comparable to pre-pandemic 2019, averaging 102,000 vehicles per day and surging to 119,000 during major events…

Managing this volume falls to the Principality’s Integrated Mobility Management Centre, which monitors 52 kilometres of roadway around the clock.

Inside the control room, operators and a supervisor track live camera feeds, paying special attention to tunnels, where strict safety rules apply. Stopped vehicles or unexpected pedestrians trigger immediate alarms, prompting checks and, if needed, full closures to prevent accidents.

The team works in constant contact with public safety services, the fire brigade, and road users. When congestion strikes, like a recent slowdown on Boulevard Princess Charlotte, they can adjust traffic light cycles, deploy warning messages on digital signs, and coordinate alternative routes. Traffic status is displayed in green, orange, or red, helping drivers anticipate conditions.

Partnerships with navigation app Waze and Radio Monaco allow real-time updates to reach motorists instantly, along with detour suggestions during heavy congestion.

Summer in particular brings a third daily rush, between 10:00 and 12:00, adding to the usual weekday peaks of 07:30 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:30. Officials advise avoiding these hours whenever possible to help maintain flow.

Through technology, teamwork, and constant vigilance, Monaco’s mobility centre is working to keep its streets, and its famously time-conscious residents and visitors, moving smoothly, even in the busiest months of the year.
