While most of Monaco enjoys a leisurely summer, the Principality’s aeronauts are flying high. Literally…
The Monaco Aeronauts Club recently participated in the prestigious International Italian Balloon Grand Prix, held in Umbria near Rome. With pilots from across the world gathering under spectacular skies, Monaco’s presence was marked not by competition, but by innovation.
Under the leadership of club president Alain Cruteanschii, the team has made a conscious decision to step away from traditional rankings and instead focus on promoting ecological hot-air ballooning. “We no longer race against others,” Cruteanschii said, “we challenge ourselves—to do better for the planet.” Their specially designed double-skin balloons significantly reduce heat loss, enabling a 50% reduction in carbon emissions.
Among those taking part in the Italian event was Monaco racing legend Thierry Boutsen, who swapped horsepower for hot air to experience the serenity of flight. “It’s the complete opposite of Formula 1,” Cruteanschii laughed, describing Boutsen’s joy at discovering the slow-paced, nature-driven world of ballooning.
Rather than offering passive joyrides, the club invites the curious to become active crew members. “If you want to join, we’ll train you to inflate, fly, and land the balloon,” Cruté explained. It’s an immersive experience that transforms spectators into skilled aeronauts. Certification takes place over a weekend, with training based at the club’s facility in Mondovi.
Describing the feeling of flight, Cruteanschii calls it “a form of peace—a balcony above the most beautiful places on Earth.” As the club prepares to welcome a new partner this September, it’s clear the future holds ambitious new heights for Monaco’s most peaceful aviators.
