The iconic Stade Louis-II is celebrating four decades at the heart of Monegasque sport and culture—and it’s doing so in style. As part of a series of commemorative events, the stadium is trading in goals for popcorn, offering the public a unique chance to experience the venue like never before: as an open-air cinema.
On Thursday, July 24, the arena will host a special screening of Luc Besson’s visually spectacular sci-fi film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, projected on its brand-new giant screen. Deckchairs will be rolled out across the pitch, with movie snacks on hand for what promises to be an unforgettable summer evening under the stars. Doors open at 19:00, with the screening set to begin at 20:30.
This event marks the final instalment in a trilogy of anniversary tributes. Earlier this year, the stadium honoured the original builders whose work reshaped the Fontvieille district, followed by a facelift for the stadium’s interior walkway and the installation of a retrospective photo exhibition titled There Was a First Time.
Attendance for the screening is free but limited, with invitations available for collection in person from the stadium’s management offices between 9:00 and 17:00 Monday to Thursday.
A technical marvel at the time of its construction and still one of Monaco’s most recognisable landmarks, the Stade Louis-II now adds “cinema” to its impressive CV.
