An underwater mountain in the Indian Ocean has been officially named in honour of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, recognising his unwavering commitment to ocean conservation and sustainable governance. The announcement coincided with the State visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the Principality, symbolising the strong ties of friendship between France and Monaco.
France submitted the proposal to name the undersea feature to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), headquartered in Monaco. The proposal was approved, and the seamount, located at 25 degrees south latitude and 69 degrees east longitude, will now bear the name Prince Albert II Seamount. The prominent undersea mountain rises from the ocean floor to a depth of 1,958 metres.
The naming of this geological feature pays tribute to HSH Prince Albert II’s dedication to advancing marine science, protecting ocean ecosystems, and promoting responsible stewardship of the planet’s waters. It also follows in the footsteps of Monaco’s historic connection to ocean exploration, notably through Prince Albert I, a pioneer of scientific marine expeditions in the early 20th century.
The International Hydrographic Organization, which plays a critical role in global ocean mapping and maritime safety, welcomed the decision. This latest gesture further cements Monaco’s reputation as a leader in the global effort to safeguard the oceans for future generations.
