Monaco marked World Environment Day on Monday, June 5 with a full day of public activities aimed at raising awareness about plastic pollution — this year’s global theme set by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

True to its environmental commitments and its goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, the Principality once again embraced the annual event, the world’s largest platform for public environmental awareness. In the heart of Monaco, at the base of Rue Princesse Caroline, the Government’s Department of the Environment set up a series of engaging stands designed to educate and inspire.

Throughout the day, visitors of all ages enjoyed hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations showcasing practical ways to reduce single-use plastics. The stands also featured eco-friendly giveaways made entirely from recycled materials. Participants were introduced to alternatives to disposable plastics through workshops and displays run by several partners.

Highlights included “zero plastic” workshops by Ecoscience Provence, a presentation of the “MaConsigne” reusable container scheme led by the Mission for Energy Transition, and the Mairie de Monaco’s “Petite boîte” — a local guide to sustainable tourism. Green Box Monaco and Ecoslowasting offered innovative logistics solutions, while the Monaco Animal Garden delighted families with a display of chickens and turtles to emphasise the importance of protecting all forms of life.

The initiative reinforced Monaco’s ongoing leadership in sustainability, with public engagement playing a key role in driving positive environmental change across the Principality.
