On Thursday, June 5, Monaco joins the international community in celebrating World Environment Day, a global event led by the United Nations to inspire action in defence of both land and sea. This year’s focus — the fight against plastic pollution — underscores one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time.

Since its inception in 1974, World Environment Day has grown into a global platform observed in over 100 countries, with Monaco consistently taking an active role. Over the years, the Principality has implemented a series of progressive measures to reduce plastic consumption, including a ban on plastic bags introduced in 2016, the prohibition of single-use plastic packaging, widespread public awareness campaigns, and ongoing beach clean-ups.

To mark the day locally, the Department of the Environment will set up a dedicated stand at the bottom of Rue Princesse Caroline, open from 9:00 to 17:30. Visitors will find a dynamic programme aimed at informing, engaging and empowering the public to make sustainable choices.

Throughout the day, the Department of the Environment, alongside Ecoscience Provence, will showcase practical alternatives to single-use plastics, shed light on misleading “green” claims in consumer goods, and highlight the daily actions taken by eco-conscious businesses in the Principality. Hands-on workshops will offer attendees the chance to explore zero-waste lifestyles while discussing biodiversity and broader environmental concerns.

From 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., Green Box Monaco will demonstrate its innovative reusable transport crates, providing a glimpse into waste-free logistics. The Department of Tourism and Conventions will be on hand between 9:30 a.m. and noon to help visitors understand local waste-sorting practices and share its guide to sustainable tourism in Monaco.

Ecoslowasting will take centre stage from 11:30. to 14:30, introducing its anti-waste platform and offering tips to cut down on food waste. In the afternoon, from 13:30 to 17:30, the Monaco Animal Garden will be represented by Laurent Peyronnel, while the Energy Transition Mission will explain the benefits of the “Ma Consigne” deposit-return system — not only for the environment but also for personal health.

Rounding off the day, the Monaco Town Hall will be present from 14:30 to 17:30 with its “Petite Boîte” initiative — a clever solution to help reduce food waste when dining out.
