France’s sweeping new anti-smoking legislation, which takes effect on July 1, 2025, is expected to influence Monaco’s own approach to public health policy…
Given the Principality’s close alignment with many French regulations, similar restrictions could soon be introduced locally, particularly as Monaco continues to position itself as a wellness-focused and family-friendly destination.
From July 1, smoking will be banned across a wide range of outdoor public spaces in France. These include beaches, parks, gardens, areas surrounding schools, colleges, and high schools, bus shelters, and all outdoor sports facilities. These join children’s playgrounds, where smoking has been banned since 2015, as zones where lighting up will no longer be allowed.
The move is part of a wider effort to protect the public, especially young people, from second-hand smoke and to discourage smoking in general. French health authorities say this initiative is a major step forward in reshaping the national culture around tobacco.
Notably, smoking will still be allowed on café and restaurant terraces, a decision aimed at preserving social freedoms. However, with fines for non-compliance, this new wave of regulation could soon shape policies in Monaco and beyond.
