The Monaco Government has issued a firm response following recent public remarks by the National Council, which it says unfairly criticised the work and pace of its civil service, particularly the Department of Legal Affairs. The government’s statement, released on Monday, challenges what it described as “hurtful and unjustified” claims of public sector “inertia” and “slowdown,” which were aired during a Council press conference and widely reported in the media.
The government defended the dedication of its civil servants, stating they continue to deliver high-quality public services and push forward major policy initiatives. It extended formal support and gratitude to the officials targeted by the Council’s accusations, emphasising their professionalism and day-to-day commitment.
At the centre of the disagreement lies the Direction des Affaires Juridiques, which the government praised for handling an increasingly heavy legislative and legal workload with distinction. Officials strongly rejected accusations that the department is obstructing the publication of official texts, instead highlighting its “remarkable productivity” and widely respected legislative expertise.
In a pointed remark, the government also questioned the timing of the National Council’s comments, noting that key meetings between both institutions are scheduled in early June to discuss major national projects—specifically, the waste recovery centre and the redevelopment of Fontvieille’s shopping complex. These sessions were arranged at the start of 2025 in mutual agreement with the National Council.
By levelling criticism shortly before these sessions, the government warned, the Council risks undermining the trust necessary for productive dialogue. Despite the tensions, the government reiterated its commitment to maintaining a respectful and constructive relationship with the National Council, grounded in institutional cooperation and the shared pursuit of Monaco’s best interests.
