Carrefour Fontvieille is ramping up its efforts to eliminate single-use plastics by expanding its reusable packaging scheme, in collaboration with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed), and the Mission for Energy Transition (MTE). After a successful pilot in June 2024, which saw 324 reusable containers sold, the supermarket is now broadening the initiative across more sections of the store and launching a renewed awareness campaign to encourage shoppers to rethink their packaging habits.

From Monday, June 2, just ahead of World Environment Day and the UN Ocean Conference, Carrefour will offer reusable container options at several popular food counters, including the rotisserie, delicatessen, salad bar, self-service fridge, and the Asian food stand. Four checkout lanes—numbered 21 to 24—will be equipped to process the MaConsigne deposit system, which aims to make sustainable choices easy and accessible.

Customers can participate by downloading the free MaConsigne app, registering their details including a bank card, and scanning their personal QR code at the till when using a consigned container. Once used, containers can be returned—unwashed—to any of the 24 MaConsigne return stations located throughout the Principality.

This initiative ties directly into Monaco’s ambitious environmental goal of eliminating single-use plastic waste by 2030. By offering practical alternatives and integrating them into daily shopping routines, Carrefour Fontvieille is making it easier for consumers to ditch disposables in favour of a more circular approach. As the MaConsigne campaign puts it, the power to change things is in the hands of the consumer—one reusable box at a time.
