The Principality marked the 16th edition of its heartfelt initiative “1 birth = 1 tree” on April 30th at the Parc Princesse Antoinette…

The ceremony reinforced Monaco’s environmental commitment with a symbolic tree-planting ceremony attended by Mayor Georges Marsan, elected officials, and families of municipal employees. This year’s tree of choice, the Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum), was selected for its Mediterranean charm and resilience to drought, aligning with broader ecological goals.

Launched in 2008 under the patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, the initiative is part of the global “Plant for the Planet” campaign, which aims to plant a billion trees worldwide. In Monaco, the operation is run in partnership with the National Forests Office (ONF) and represents a strong municipal stance in favour of biodiversity, sustainability, and climate adaptation.

The 2024 edition saw the planting of 721 trees, each one symbolising a birth registered in Monaco that year. These trees are being planted within the Pali State Forest as part of the broader “Ilot d’Avenir” programme, which since 2020 has focused on introducing more climate-resilient species to Mediterranean forestry.

Over the last 16 years, more than 15,000 trees have been planted, making this not only a symbolic gesture for families but a tangible contribution to local reforestation efforts. Beyond beautifying the landscape, this meaningful project cultivates environmental awareness and leaves a lasting legacy for future generations of Monegasques.
