His Serene Highness Prince Albert II and Her Royal Highness Princess Caroline of Hanover undertook a poignant visit to France’s Ardennes region this week, exploring historic sites tied to the Grimaldi dynasty…

The princely couple was warmly welcomed by local residents as they visited the communes of Charleville-Mézières, Rethel, La Cassine and Lametz—villages that form part of the Sites historiques Grimaldi de Monaco network.

This deep-rooted connection between the Principality and the Ardennes traces back nearly 250 years, when Louise d’Aumont Mazarin married Honoré IV, Prince of Monaco. Through this union, the Grimaldis inherited vast estates in the Ardennes and other regions of France, making the area an important chapter in Monaco’s extended history.

The visit included a stop at the Ardennes Museum in Charleville-Mézières, where a joint archival exhibition with Monaco showcases more than 200 historical artefacts—ranging from documents and portraits to ancient coins—spanning eight centuries of local history.

“This journey is not just about remembering the past,” HSH Prince Albert II said during the visit. “It is about creating new links, celebrating shared heritage, and promoting cultural exchange.”

As part of their visit, they unveiled commemorative plaques designating the towns of La Cassine and Lametz as official Grimaldi historic sites. Local residents, visibly moved by the royal presence, expressed great pride in their villages’ connection to Monaco. “It’s an honour to welcome the Prince here. This brings our shared history to life,” said one attendee.

The visit concluded with a promise of future collaborations and cultural exchanges. Prince Albert is expected to return to the region soon to visit Château-Porcien and Arnicourt—further cementing the enduring bond between Monaco and the Ardennes.
