The Principality of Monaco this week welcomed His Most Eminent Highness Fra’ John Dunlap, Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, for an official 48-hour visit marked by solemn reflection, diplomacy, and humanitarian engagement…

The visit, which coincided with the passing of Pope Francis, carried particular emotional weight, as both the Order and the late Pontiff shared a profound commitment to aiding the most vulnerable.

Alberto Di Luca, the Order’s Ambassador to Monaco, highlighted the deep-rooted historical connections between the Grimaldi family and the Order, which date back to the 12th century. “This visit commemorates 15 years of official diplomatic relations between Monaco and the Order,” Di Luca noted, adding that collaboration has only intensified over the past decades through joint humanitarian initiatives in regions such as Lebanon and Senegal.

The visit included a working session with Monaco-based partners, a mass at the Cathedral celebrated with the Archbishop, and a formal meeting between the Grand Master and Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene. In a poignant announcement, Ambassador Di Luca revealed that Princess Charlene would be joining the Order of Malta, marking a new chapter in the Principality’s partnership with the Catholic humanitarian organisation.

With operations in 114 countries, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta provides neutral, apolitical humanitarian support regardless of faith or nationality. “Ours is a mission of faith and action,” Di Luca said. “In places like Bethlehem, our hospital serves people of all religions, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, because true humanitarian diplomacy knows no borders.”

As Monaco mourns the passing of Pope Francis, this visit reaffirmed shared values and continued dedication to serving the poor and the sick, in Monaco and far beyond.
