With two major motoring events on the horizon, the Monaco Government has announced tougher penalties aimed at curbing reckless driving and disorder linked to high-performance vehicles on public roads.

The move comes in anticipation of large-scale gatherings expected during Top Marques Monaco from May 7 to 11, and the 82nd Monaco Grand Prix, running from May 22 to 25. While these events officially celebrate automotive excellence, they have also historically attracted spontaneous meet-ups of supercar enthusiasts — some of whom engage in unlawful, and often dangerous, driving behaviour.

Officials warn that such impromptu displays, frequently unplanned, pose a serious threat to public order and safety, with previous editions marred by noise pollution, speeding, and aggressive driving in residential areas.

To address the issue, the Prince’s Government will extend the impound period for vehicles caught violating traffic laws during these key dates. Any driver found breaking the rules can expect their car to be immediately seized for up to 120 hours — a sharp increase designed to deter offenders and maintain public peace.

Authorities say the reinforced measures are not just about managing events, but about ensuring the safety and well-being of Monaco’s residents and visitors alike.
