After years of bouncing between NBA teams, German big man Daniel Theis has decided to take his talents to Europe, signing with the Roca Team in a move that signals a fresh start.

The 32-year-old, who was recently traded by the New Orleans Pelicans and subsequently waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder, had multiple options on the table—including other NBA offers. But after years of being shuffled between teams, Theis has opted for stability and a key role with the reigning French champions, Monaco.

Sources from BasketNews and L’Équipe report that Theis was also pursued by Panathinaikos, who reportedly put forth a more lucrative offer. However, the pull of Monaco—both in terms of playing opportunities and the club’s competitive aspirations—proved stronger.

Theis, a 2023 FIBA World Cup champion with Germany, made his NBA debut with the Boston Celtics in 2017 after three dominant seasons with Brose Bamberg in the German league. Initially a key piece in Brad Stevens’ system, even earning a starting role at times, his influence waned following his departure from Boston. Stints with the Pacers, Clippers, Rockets, Bulls, and Pelicans followed, but none provided long-term stability.

While his move to Monaco appears to mark a return to European basketball for good, there’s still a chance he could make his way back to the NBA. According to BasketNews, his contract reportedly includes an NBA-out clause—meaning if the right opportunity arises, he could once again take the leap across the Atlantic. But for now, Theis is set to bolster Monaco’s frontcourt as they aim for EuroLeague glory.
