The Principality of Monaco is in mourning following the sudden death of S.E. Didier Guillaume, Minister of State, at the age of 65. Hospitalised for several days, Mr. Guillaume succumbed to a fulminating illness on Friday, January 17, leaving the nation grieving his unexpected loss.

In a statement issued by the Palace, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II expressed “his immense sadness” and extended “his most sincere condolences to his wife, Béatrice Frecenon-Guillaume, his children, his brother, as well as to his entire family and loved ones.” The Prince further honoured Didier Guillaume’s “remarkable commitment in the service of the Principality since he took office on September 2, 2024,” emphasising his determination and expertise in advancing critical issues for Monaco both nationally and internationally. “His human qualities were also greatly appreciated,” the statement read.

Didier Guillaume’s tenure, though brief, left an indelible mark on Monaco. With a storied career in French government, he brought vast experience and an exceptional ability to unite and mobilise others, earning admiration and respect throughout the Principality.

Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Government Advisor-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, will continue to serve as interim Minister of State. Her temporary appointment, made on Friday, January 10 due to Guillaume’s hospitalisation, ensures continuity in governance during this period of mourning.

The government and administrative staff expressed their profound condolences to Guillaume’s family and pledged to honour his legacy by continuing the work he began.

Details regarding the funeral and commemorative arrangements will be announced in the coming days as Monaco collectively remembers and pays tribute to a dedicated public servant whose impact will resonate for years to come. Guillaume’s leadership and commitment have left a lasting impact on Monaco, and his legacy will continue to guide the Government as it upholds the path he helped to shape.
