His Serene Highness Prince Albert II has paid heartfelt tribute to Henry Rey, a towering figure in Monegasque public and sporting life, who passed away at the age of 86…
Describing him as “an emblematic figure in Monegasque history,” the Sovereign praised Rey’s contributions to the Principality’s political and sporting landscape, highlighting his leadership roles and enduring legacy.
Rey served as President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee from 1975 to 1994, during which Monaco participated in its first Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and hosted the second edition of the Games of the Small States of Europe. “He played a crucial role in promoting and developing local and international sporting activities,” noted the Olympic Committee in their tribute, adding that his innovative spirit and dedication will remain unforgettable.
Rey’s tenure as the youngest-ever President of AS Monaco FC saw the club return to Division 1 in 1971 under rigorous management. His influence extended beyond football, presiding over the Monte-Carlo Golf Club and the Monaco Weightlifting Federation, cementing his reputation as a passionate advocate for sport.
Politically, Rey was a stalwart of the National Council for four decades, where his leadership and commitment left an indelible mark. Thomas Brezzo, President of the National Council, lauded his “unwavering dedication” to the Principality.
Rey’s funeral will take place at Monaco Cathedral on Friday, January 17.
