A Monegasque delegation, led by Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, attended the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology, and Applications in Vienna from November 25 to 27, 2024.

The conference, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aimed to strengthen international cooperation and highlight nuclear innovations that contribute to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

In her speech, Minister Berro-Amadeï emphasized Monaco’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. She underscored the country’s longstanding support for the IAEA Marine Environment Laboratories, established in Monaco in 1961, which play a crucial role in studying and protecting ocean ecosystems. Additionally, she highlighted the Prince Albert II Foundation’s recent partnership with the IAEA to address critical issues such as ocean acidification, marine pollution, and the impacts of climate change on oceans.

Monaco’s dedication extends beyond environmental concerns to include advancements in human health. Berro-Amadeï reaffirmed Monaco’s support for the IAEA’s “Rays of Hope” initiative, which focuses on combating cancer by establishing and enhancing radiotherapy units in underserved regions. Having initially supported the pilot phase targeting seven African countries in 2022, Monaco renewed its financial backing for the initiative through 2025, extending its scope to Latin America and Asia.

The delegation included Ambassador Lorenzo Ravano, Monaco’s Permanent Representative to the IAEA, and Andrea Colombo-Pastorelli, Second Secretary at Monaco’s Embassy in Germany. Through its participation, Monaco reinforced its role as a key advocate for sustainable and peaceful nuclear applications in tackling global challenges, from environmental preservation to advancing healthcare access.
