On Tuesday, November 12, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution titled ‘Sport as a Driver of Sustainable Development’, following negotiations led by Monaco and Qatar, co-chairs of the Group of Friends of Sport for Sustainable Development.
This resolution highlights the essential role of sport in advancing education, physical and mental health, gender equality, and social inclusion, while also promoting values of peace, tolerance, and respect. The resolution further addresses the need to combat corruption in sports.
Representing Monaco, Second Secretary Alyson Calem-Sangiorgio spoke at the UN Assembly, emphasising sport’s unifying power and the importance of partnerships, along with the central role of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The session also marked a tribute to IOC President Thomas Bach, who will step down after this term.
The Group of Friends of Sport organised a special meeting and luncheon in his honour, during which Bach delivered a forward-looking address, discussing the future impact of artificial intelligence on the sports industry.
