At the recent UN General Assembly’s Legal Affairs Committee session on the Protocols to the Geneva Conventions, Ms. Daphné Le Son, Deputy Permanent Representative of Monaco to the UN, took the floor to emphasise Monaco’s ongoing dedication to international humanitarian law. She urged all member states to honour their obligations under these protocols, which are essential for protecting civilians during armed conflicts.

In her address, Ms. Le Son called attention to the severe, often disproportionate, impact of armed violence on women, children, and people with disabilities. She also condemned the alarming increase in targeted attacks on journalists and humanitarian workers, emphasising the need for heightened protections in these vulnerable groups.

Ms. Le Son highlighted Monaco’s proactive efforts in promoting and implementing international humanitarian law, both through educational initiatives with the Institute of International Humanitarian Law in Sanremo and through direct support on the ground. Monaco’s partnerships with organisations such as Handicap International, the Red Cross, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) exemplify the principality’s commitment to safeguarding civilians affected by conflict globally.
