HSH Prince Albert, President of the Monaco Red Cross, took part in the opening of the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Geneva, a key gathering for global humanitarian leaders. Opening on October 28, the conference convenes representatives from 191 National Societies, including Prince Albert and Monaco’s delegation, under the theme “Managing Uncertainty and Strengthening Humanity.” The sovereign’s attendance was warmly appreciated by many, as Prince Albert places people at the heart of his actions.

The event comes at a critical juncture as global conflicts, climate change, and health crises place unprecedented demands on humanitarian organisations. Prince Albert joined prominent figures, including Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein and Kate Forbes, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, to reaffirm Monaco’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts. This year’s conference also marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, foundational treaties in humanitarian law that Monaco was among the first to ratify.

For the Monaco Red Cross, the conference holds special significance as it remembers 30 volunteers recently lost in the line of duty, underscoring the risks faced by humanitarian workers worldwide. Leaders at the event are set to review the protections offered by international humanitarian law and emphasise governments’ responsibilities in safeguarding these frontline responders.

The conference, which concluded on October 31, highlighted the essential role of National Societies as partners to public authorities and offered a platform to advance critical principles of humanitarian neutrality and protection.
