Monaco’s delegation, led by Christophe Robino, Minister of Social Affairs and Health, represented the Principality at the 74th session of the World Health Organization’s Regional Committee for Europe (WHO Europe) held in Copenhagen from October 29-31, 2024. The gathering brought together representatives from the 53 WHO Europe member states, partner organizations, and civil society to review Europe’s health landscape and discuss WHO Europe’s strategic direction for the future.

Highlighting Monaco’s commitment to WHO’s mission, Minister Robino emphasized the need for ambitious, collective action to address the significant challenges facing the region. Key discussions centered on the severe impacts of armed conflicts on public health, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East. Monaco underscored the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and strongly condemned attacks on healthcare facilities. Additionally, Minister Robino expressed concern over the resurgence of polio in Gaza, stressing the critical need for universal vaccine access, especially in conflict zones.

In a notable development for WHO Europe, Dr. Hans Kluge was re-elected as Regional Director for a second term (2025-2030). Dr. Kluge outlined his renewed focus on advancing WHO Europe’s goals through strengthened political and technical priorities, a decision applauded by all member states.

The session also provided Monaco’s delegation with the opportunity to engage with other national representatives and partners, allowing for valuable exchanges on recent health policy developments in Monaco and potential areas for collaboration to enhance public health services and policy.
