Monaco is making significant progress in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions…

The 2024 National Inventory Report, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is based on 2022 data and highlights a notable 34.5% decrease in GHG emissions compared to 1990 levels, with total emissions recorded at 66.53 kt CO2 equivalent.

This reduction is attributed to several factors, including decreased fuel consumption in the transportation and building sectors, as well as increased use of biofuels. However, the building sector, mobility, and waste management remain the primary sources of GHG emissions in the Principality.

Monaco has also made significant advances in energy management, with 65.5% of its energy consumption coming from renewable sources in 2022. Renewable electricity, particularly hydroelectric power, accounted for 43% of the country’s total energy consumption. These developments are part of the government’s Climate, Air, and Energy Plan, which aims to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990.

In addition to emission reduction efforts, Monaco is also focusing on climate adaptation. Initiatives include urban renaturation and the development of nature-based solutions to strengthen the country’s resilience to climate change. The Environmental Department has begun work on a long-term low-carbon strategy to guide Monaco toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, while addressing current challenges posed by climate change.
