The Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG) in Monaco is facing a serious blood shortage and has issued an urgent call for donations.

Despite efforts to boost reserves, only 2,000 bags have been collected out of the 4,500 to 5,000 needed annually to meet the population’s needs. This shortage is particularly concerning for patients who rely on transfusions, such as those with cancer or severe blood disorders.

Mélanie Rinaudo-Gaujous, head of the Monaco blood transfusion centre, emphasised the critical nature of the situation in an interview with Radio Monaco: “Nothing can replace blood, and donations are especially crucial for people with cancer and certain blood diseases.”

The French Blood Establishment is temporarily stepping in to help, but CHPG is eager to reduce this dependency by rallying local donors to contribute. Any healthy adult over the age of 18 and weighing more than 50 kg is eligible to donate. The process is quick and straightforward, taking only 45 minutes, and can have a life-saving impact.

To make donating even easier, a free shuttle service is available to pick up donors from their homes or offices, transport them to CHPG, and bring them back afterward. Appointments can be made through the Monaco Santé platform, allowing for a smooth and efficient experience.

The law permits men to donate blood up to six times a year, while women can donate up to four times. Each donation is crucial in ensuring that CHPG has enough reserves to support the community’s healthcare needs.

With Monaco’s strong tradition of community support and solidarity, now is the time for residents to step up and give the gift of life.
