The mayor of Monaco, George Marsan was placed in police custody on Thursday, December 14.

The reasoning behind the mayor’s police custody has not yet been disclosed to the press or the public but the General Prosecutor’s Office did confirm to Monaco-Matin that an investigation is underway.

Deputy mayor Georges Gambarini is also said to have been questioned by the Monegasque police on an eventful Thursday for the town hall, in which first deputy Camille Svara is acting as a stand-in Mayor for the moment.

66 year-old Marsan first joined the municipal council as an elected official in 1991, before being elected mayor for the first time in 2003 and for a record sixth consecutive time in March, 2023.
