The Department of Urban Amenities will replace 65 of Monaco’s 140 lifts, escalators and travelators between now and 2025.

One of the reasons for the major undertaking is the fact that many of the 80 public lifts and 37 escalators, plus the other people movers are due for replacement after several years of service.

The other is the need to make them more energy efficient and more attractive as an alternative to using cars.

“The current installations will be replaced by ones that use much less energy,” Régis Fontanez, Head of the DAU’s energy section, said last week.

Work begins in earnest in 2021, with 17 lifts and escalators earmarked for renewal.
