In a statement published on the club’s website on September 4, AS Monaco announced that two individuals are suspected of having contracted coronavirus. The club adds that the state of the health of these individuals “does not inspire concern”. The two possibly infected people are head coach Niko Kovac and starting goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte.

Kovac and Lecomte are “subject to the health protocol in force and are under the supervision of [the club’s] medical staff”. If these cases are confirmed, then AS Monaco will have to go without two very vital characters against Nimes at home on September 13.

On the same day as the announcement was made, the boys in red and white took to the Allianz Riviera stadium to compete in a friendly fixture against derby nemesis OGC Nice. Having fallen to 2-0 behind Nice in the first quarter of an hour of play, Monaco made a great push to equalise and then some by the final minutes, resulting in an enjoyable 2-3 result for the visitors.

Portuguese international Gelson Martins was instrumental in Friday’s success, having directly contributed to each Monaco goal scored. Newcomers Kevin Volland and Ciao Henrique made their debut performance for the club.

The next match up will be at home, in Stade Louis II and will see Monaco take on Ligue 1 opponents FC Nantes. Kick off is scheduled for 17:00 on September 13.
